Futsal was important in helping to develop my ball control, quick thinking, passing… also for dribbling, balance, concentration…Futsal was very, very important, no doubt.

FIVE TOP TIPS FOR FUTSAL

Tip One - Substitutions
Futsal substitutions are more like ice hockey - players go fast and hard for a few minutes and then are subbed for a breather, then come back on again. Your subs bench should be more like a tag team. Use your whole squad and as many subs as you can.

Tip Two - Everyone attacks, everyone defends
Because they might only be on the pitch for a few minutes at a time, players should cover every inch, attacking together and defending together - then come off for a breather.

Tip Three - Pass, move, pass, move, pass...

The ball is smaller, heavier and less bouncy. It's not for booting. Futsal is all about quick, accurate passing and fast movement to make angles for the next pass. It's every player's chance to play like Lionel Messi, so let them.

Tip Four - The results really don't matter

These few weeks of Futsal are a chance for your players to try something new. A chance for them to take risks, try new skills, have a go at outrageous skill. They'll make hundreds of mistakes, every single one a learning opportunity. The scores and results are not important - it's about player development.

Tip Five - Quiet please
The children need a quiet, calm environment to learn new skills. So that means…
- managers must keep their instructions to their team talks and a quiet word with their substitutes about to come on.
- absolutely no 'instructions' shouted by managers to players on the pitch during the games - let the kids make their own decisions and mistakes.
- parents are allowed into the Hall and can watch QUIETLY.

As a little boy in Argentina, I played futsal for my club. It was tremendous fun, and it really helped me become who I am today.
